Contract basics

Check these items before signing. If something is unclear — request clarification in writing.

Must-check items

  • Role & duties: clear responsibilities, location, manager.
  • Pay: rate/salary, overtime rules, bonuses, pay date.
  • Hours: weekly hours, shift rules, breaks (paid/unpaid).
  • Probation: length, terms, notice period during probation.
  • Notice period: employee vs employer (is it equal?).
  • Vacation: number of days, approval process.
  • Sick leave / insurance: what is included and where it’s described.
  • Copies: you must receive a copy of the signed contract.

What to ask to add (if missing)

  • Overtime rate and when it applies (weekday/evening/weekend/holiday).
  • How shifts are scheduled and how changes are communicated.
  • Clear scope of “other tasks” (boundaries).
  • Written description of bonus/commission rules (if promised).

  • Salary / hourly rate (gross) and pay date
  • Weekly hours and schedule process
  • Overtime/holiday pay rules
  • Probation period and notice period
